Today’s Scriptures present Jesus, as the Word of God, who brings light into the world for those who walk in darkness. The Word of God offers hope to all nations and peoples who believe in the power of God’s word.
As people of faith, we are invited into an encounter with God. This encounter seeks to transform us. We are called to reflect on how we have integrated God’s message into our daily lives.
Today, the Church celebrates “Word of God Sunday.” The recognition of Jesus as the Word of God made flesh is the first step in all nations receiving the unity God offers to all peoples including the Gentiles. God’s Word can transform us. Are we ready to be changed by God’s Word?
Wherever people seek unity, division has a way of entering in. Longing for peace in our troubled world can seem like an impossibility. However, we know that our unity is found in Jesus’ life, suffering, death, and resurrection. We are all called to be that light of hope and unity in our world. This is how the reign of God is established among us. In fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy, a great light has shown among us.
As Jesus begins his public ministry, he calls his disciples to encounter God’s mercy and unity. This group of disciples are called from amongst ordinary people conducting their ordinary tasks of daily life. He wants us to serve just as we are. One by one they follow Jesus and accept his announcement that God’s kingdom is among us.
Knowing that we will always be challenged by our imperfections, our weaknesses, and even our aspirations, are we ready to renew our commitment to encounter Jesus in the ordinary tasks of our daily lives and find light and unity in God’s word.
