Fr. Joseph F. McDonough, C.S.Sp., of Norwood, Massachusetts, a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, died peacefully July 8, 2018. He was 92 years old.
Son of the late Joseph F. McDonough and Rose A. (Shannon) McDonough. Beloved brother of the late Margaret Keegan, Catherine McDonough, Eleanor McDonough, Frances Kearns, Rosemary Hopkins, Charles McDonough and John McDonough. Also predeceased by brothers in-law Thomas Keegan, James Kearns and Frank Hopkins. Survived by sisters in-law Iris McDonough of Needham and Phyllis McDonough of Norwood. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Born in Norwood in 1926, Father Joe had quite a remarkable life. He was educated in the Norwood Public Schools. He was a member of the Norwood High School State Championship Baseball Team in 1943 and with his team was inducted into the Norwood High School Hall of Fame. Throughout his life he enjoyed all sports and spent many hours watching games especially the Red Sox, Patriots and Bruins.
Father Joe professed his vows as a member of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit on August 15, 1947 at Holy Ghost Novitiate in Ridgefield, CT and was ordained to the Priesthood June 5, 1953 at St. Mary’s Seminary, Ferndale in Norwalk, CT.
Father was first appointed to Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Philadelphia where he served for three years. In 1957, he accepted a mission appointment in the Diocese of Moshi, District of Kilimanjaro in the Pare Mountains. Upon his return to the States in 1960, he was assigned to Chippewa Falls, WI; Holy Ghost and Immaculate Heart parishes in Louisiana; St. Mark’s in Harlem; St. Patrick’s in Charleston and St. Catherine’s in Compton, RI. In 1975, he was Chaplain at Duquesne University. In 1976, he became pastor at St. Madeleine Sophie in Tiverton, RI until 1983 and again in 1988. In between he was pastor at St. Theresa in Tiverton. Father retired to his childhood home in Norwood in 2000.
As a longtime Norwood resident, Father Joe has celebrated many Masses at Saint Catherine of Siena Church and throughout his retirement he continued to participate in the 11:00 AM Mass on Sunday.
Funeral from the Kraw-Kornack Funeral home, 1248 Washington Street, Norwood, MA. Funeral Mass Monday, July 16 at 9:00 AM at Saint Catherine of Siena Church, Norwood, MA. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours Sunday, July 15 from 4 to 8 PM. Interment at Norwood Highlands Cemetery.
