Mission Statement:

We, the Catholic Christian family of St. Adelaide are a community of believers, empowered by the Spirit of Our Lord, Jesus Christ. We are called to proclaim the living Gospel and welcome all into our faith the Word through outreach, support, charity, service to the poor and to all those in need.

History:

Msgr. Hugh McNelis had just returned from an assignment in Africa in 1950 when Bishop Charles F. Buddy, Bishop of San Diego 1936-1966, gave him the mission of opening St. Adelaide, a new parish in Highland, CA. The original parish comprised about 30 families and an orange grove with a very old house on it. After a flurry of fundraising and much hard work, the first church was built by Christmas of 1956. In 1962 a parish school went up and the next year, a convent to house the sisters who taught in the school.

In 1967 the new pastor, Fr. William Bolger, erected the Parish Hall and in 1977, Fr. William Erstad, a new rectory. But the following year, a disastrous fire destroyed the church.

The opening of the new church came on June 4, 1980. The most recent pastor, at that time, Fr. John Ryan, retired in 2002 after breaking ground for a new Parish Center in 2001 and dedicating it on May 19, 2002.

In July of that year, Sr. Maura Feeley, RSM, began her work as Pastoral Coordinator to help guide St. Adelaide's parish into the future. Now embracing more than 2700 registered parishioners with more than 6000 family members, the parish has grown and flourished over the years.

Our current pastor, Pierre Deglaire, CSSp, arrived at St. Adelaide in July of 2009 and has since dedicated himself to the service and growth of our Church. He places the needs of the parish at a priority, especially with the expansion of our Church building which is scheduled to break ground in November 2012.

Welcome to St. Ambrose Catholic faith community. Located in the Hyde Park/Kenwood community of Chicago, we are a multicultural, multiethnic parish. We value our diversity and continue to look for new ways of being present to our surrounding community. We hope that this will give you a brief look at our community where God has gathered people of many races, languages and cultures to share our Catholic faith. There is plenty of room at the table of the Lord. WELCOME!!!!

BRIEF HISTORY

Founded in 1906, this Gothic-style church was designed by Zachary Taylor Davis, one of St. Ambrose’s parishioners at that time.

Residents surrounding the parish at the time were mostly Irish immigrants and Jewish families. Msgr. William Foley was the founding pastor. He served as Lt. Colonel in the chaplains corps and is pictured in the stained glass window at the rear of the church blessing the soldiers being dispatched to war.

As new immigrants from Mississippi, Alabama and Texas arrived, the population of St. Ambrose continued to change. Today we are a multicultural, multiethnic parish. We value our diversity and continue to look for new ways of being present to the Hyde Park/ Kenwood community.
